Agile in Government
Agile in Government & Private SectorIntro to Agile in Government & Private Sector
Agile is an approach to project management and software development that helps various teams reach project goals faster and more efficiently. It can work in various industries such as healthcare and manufacturing, but also in government and the private sector where an agile team would be more suitable for handling the constant change such sectors involve.
Leadership Tribe has worked with various companies and teams over the years to help build agile methods and the agile mindset that can improve delivery of the project. Many government and private sector projects often come to a halt or have a stalled release and the goal here is to avoid that risk that can cost everyone – including tax payers!
For example – “The federal government is planning to spend at least $90 billion on major IT investments in FY 2021” – (https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-20-590g), in addition to that, Agile Principles are being seeked by the government based teams overall, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) have published a guide on best practices for Agile adoption and implementation to help support government organizations adopt an agile approach.

Why use Agile in federal government?
There are many benefits to using an agile approach and while many agile methodologies are pursued by the government, in fact in recent years “federal agencies were required to certify that large IT investments are adequately implementing incremental development, including Agile software development, which has been adopted by many federal agencies” – Source: Forbes.
With key goals being to reduce the cost of large IT projects, reduce excess program management / project management, and reduce risk by working in agile sprints and testing on an ongoing basis, discovering issues early on – you can see why an agile framework is more sought after these days. Having greater transparency throughout the agile project benefits the staff, the team and in this case, the people overall.
How to implement Agile in the public sector
Due to the history of these sectors though, there are often many roadblocks, sometimes due to the team itself and a resistant work culture in some public sector organizations. Rules and regulations from policy makers are often a concern as is slow decision making, or one common case these days is that government leaders are often not understanding the full commitment needed. Change has also been tougher in some cases during the pandemic, at least for certain government agencies – where problem solving has been relegate by ad hoc reaction to trends.
We can help you improve agile adoption through various methods though such as raising Agile awareness for all stakeholders; project management team, procurement team, government leaders and more. With examples of projects in various parts of the lifecycle, we can help measure metrics and funnel key initiatives more efficiently.
